Planning permission

Do you need planning permission to turn your garage (integral, door to kitchen) in to a downstairs bedroom and bathroom?
I am thinking long term if my husband cannot manage the stairs, rather than move could we turn our garage - it is a double garage into a bedroom with a bathroom?
How would you do it? I mean is the first step permission or do you need plans to put before the Council before you start?

If you're not changing the outside appearance then I don't think so but you will probably need building regs approval.0

You're changing it to habitable so will definitely need building regs, especially if someone is sleeping in it. Planning permission is much less likely to be needed, though you should still ask the council, neighbours might be upset if you put a window looking straight into one of their bedrooms or the lounge!Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230

Thanks to everyone that replied. Next stop the Council.0

FWIW if you're getting a professional in to do this, they should be doing everything to building regs standard even if it wasn't required, so getting building regs approval should be nothing more than a formality (and a fee). Try and get a recommendation for a builder if you can.0

FWIW, I'd put a garage conversion right up there as 'building job most likely to be bodged'
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I agree, which is I think OP should try and get a recommendation. All the more reason to make sure you get building control involved I guess.0
