First time credit card - help needed!

Hi,

I was looking for some advice around getting my first credit card.

I am looking to use it to buy some flights this year and pay for my car insurance, but also looking to starting building my credit history as I am saving for a house.
I am 27 years old and have never had a credit card as have never felt the need for one

My annual in come is just over £32K. I rent privately and have been in my current address for 2 1/2 years. The only outstanding loan I have is my student loan. I have had no previous loans but have run an experian credit report and my credit score is showing as 996.

I have just under £5000 in my ISA so would look to use this to cover monthly payments if I was struggling but should be able to avoid using this and pay out of my monthly income.

I am looking for 0% for around 18 months on purchases. I have seen a lot of cards offering more than this but not sure longer would be ideal for my situation.

I am nervous about applying for a credit card as I have never had one before and am worried about the impact of it on my credit score should my application not be accepted.

Any ideas or recommendations on where to start and what cards are?

Any info would be great. Thanks!

  • The short answer if you probably won't get one. Your lack of credit history makes you higher risk than if you have previous credit experience.

However, no harm in making one application. Try one of the soft search tools as a guide for where to try.

If that gets declined, try your own bank or a sub prime card, and build up a few months experience before trying for something better again.
  • I would ask your current account provider if you're pre-approved for one of their cards. My wife was in a situation similar to yours (more savings, less income) and was given a £2300 limit on a 0% card at Santander. That was the first credit facility she ever had.
