Mortgage lender bank statements

Hi Everyone!
Just after a bit of advice/previous experiences people have had when applying! We are first time buyers and are in the initial stages. Had our first mortgage appointment on Wednesday and just getting bank statements and pay slips together to send to the lender for a DIP. How much do the lenders scrutinise these at this stage...obviously over the Christmas period we have both spent a little more than usual in the pub!
Many thanks for your help!
