To encourage you to pay by direct debit? DD is a much cheaper method of payment for them to accept.0

They also have to pay their card handling company a fee, which is either a percentage of each transaction, a fixed fee per transaction or a combination of both. It would appear that they are trying to recoup this as well as encourage DD payments.
You sometimes see this in smaller shops where they impose a fee on card payments below a certain amount or don't allow such small transactions by card at all. This is because above that amount there is usually enough profit from the items purchased to cover the card fee.0
