No claims bonus

Today I had a bump with another car, the other car was pulling out of a side road onto the main road I was on and I swerved left around it back into the lane I was originally in, and then bumped into the left front bumper on their car. She is adamant it's my fault and I feel it's hers as it wouldn't of happened if she hadn't of pulled out in front of me. There is no damage whatsoever to my car and she tried to show me a few marks on the side of her car which I rubbed off as it turned out to be grass. She said she will check her car in the morning and get back to me as it was too dark and raining heavily. Will I lose my no claims bonus if the insurer feels it was my fault? As I am not making a claim for my car.

If your insurer pays out a claim from the other side then you will lose some ncd assuming that it's not protected.

You will normally lose 2 years ( normally from a maximum of 5) and none will be awarded for the current year. Check your policy wording to see exactly how your insurer deals with ncd

This is my first year driving, I make my last payment at the end of this month and then I was due to get my ncb in march.

Just my luck for something like this to happen near the end.

And also what is my excess used for? Is that what I have to pay for fixing my own car or do I have to pay that if I cause damage to someone else's car as well?

With nearly all insurance policies your excess is only payable if you claim for damage to your own car - third party claims will be paid in full.

The only exception I know of are a rather obscure company called XS Direct who have a £3000 excess which applies to all sections of their policies - not a nice prospect. But you have to go rather out of your way to find a polocy that bad.

You can get any lost NCD reinstated (if it's cost effective) by reimbursing your insurer their outlay over a successful claim against you
