Click Clack sink plug stuck

I have a click clack type of bathroom sink plug and it is truly stuck inside the drain. I pushed down hard (perhaps too hard I'm now thinking) to drain the water and it just refused to budge. This has happened numerous times and normally it would eventually just pop up - but not this time.

Have tried the suction/plunger method to no avail. I've read about spraying WD40 on it, would this work or will I just have to call a plumber?

I have one of those and it is a pain. With mine when it sticks I can unscrew it. Have you tried turning it?

If all else fails, you may have to remove the S bend and push it up from below.

The top should unscrew to reveal the mechanism. Use downward pressure from rubber gloves, or something with similar grip, to turn it.

If the mech has seized due to dirt, corrosion or similar, you may be able to release it with a good clean and some penetrating/easing oil.

They are very cheap on Ebay, and a doddle to replace. Unscrew top disc, remove mechanism with small spanner, replace, bingo. I always keep a spare, just in case. Sooner or later it will fail. Just make sure you get the correct length. While you are waiting for it to arrive, a cheap old basin plug will suffice.
  • Simple instructions on disassembling one of these can be found at instructables dot com 'Fixing a push-button sink'.

Ours would not pop up until you had pushed it about a hundred times. I removed the mechanism as shown, sprayed with lots of Viakal, then lots of WD40, kept clicking it and it started to work properly.
