Changing suppliers with a FIT.

Hi,

My son has bought a house with solar panel, both FIT and electricity are with EDF. Their paperwork states that he must have electricity supplied by them in order to get a FIT, unless he is with a smaller non FIT registered supplier. (re-registered in his case.)
Has anyone out there tried changing their electricity to one of the big suppliers and told to take their FIT with them?
We have a FIT with Scottish Power - and their FAQ section makes it clear that you can take the FIT or leave it with them.
No such luck with EDF. Where are the 'rules'
Thanks

The 'rules' are simple. Your supply and FiT contracts are separate. You are free to switch to a new supplier at will. EDF will continue to pay your FITs. I have switched many times in the past 3 years; EDF has paid my FiT payments for 5 years.

FWIW, I think you may have misread the paperwork. If you install PV Solar and your supplier is a FiT- payer then you have to register the panels with them. There is no advantage in switching FiT-payers as the Govt sets the rate.

  • Hi,

Thanks for that - he has had to re-register the panels in his name, so that may why they want him to be with them. This has been slightly messy as they have wanted 3 sorts of ID and the original installers certificate - which they should have.. I wouldn't want to do that every time. Agreed there is no advantage in switching unless you have a poor payer.:j
