Argos

As a Christmas present for my partner, I bought a playstation 4 from one of their stores in December 2015. It developed a hardware fault late last year, but unfortunately I didn't have the receipt any more or the original box...

The local store said I really needed to find the receipt, and I spent ages turning over the house looking for it.

They admitted that they could look up the original till receipt on their system if I knew which day I had bought it. Unfortunately they were now into their busy christmas season and asked if I was willing to wait until the new year to investigate further, which I said I was as long as they were still willing to assist even though more than a year would have passed since the original purchase.

Anyway, fast forward a few weeks and they had managed to track down on their system a transaction that matched against the Argos purchase on my credit card statement for December 2015, which they were happy to accept as proof of purchase and swapped the faulty playstation for a new model without quibble this morning.

They went out of their way to help despite my losing the receipt and having no proof of purchase other than my credit card statement, so just a praise for Argos. I know these big companies often act like they couldn't care less about the customer once money has been handed over, but they were great!

Reading your post, I wasn't expecting that last paragraph! :D

I was anticipating them saying "more than a year, guv. Out of warranty"

I don't know whether I was just lucky, but I was unfailingly polite to them throughout the entire process, not least because I had no proof of purchase and knew they had the upper hand. I didn't demand or expect anything.

To be honest, had they said they couldn't help, I'd probably have shrugged my shoulders and tried to tackle the issue directly with Sony.

You did it the right way which is why you got the right result.
  • Well done Argos and great skills by the OP.

But you did have proof of purchase.
You may not have had a receipt but a credit card statement is still proof of purchase and your rights with presenting this are no different to showing them the original receipt.

This. They actually gave you what you were entitled to, a credit card statement is a valid proof of purchase. Fair play for them not being awkward about it though.

Its because you dealt with it in a sensible manner.

Alot of customers wouldn't and would kick up a fuss or start spouting stuff about rights they didn't understand.

I had similar help from Do-it-All , part of the same group, when my aircon unit broke 6 months out of warranty, but after very little use. (typically the hot weather disappeared a week after purchase)

The manager agreed that it was not fit for purpose and gave a full refund, as aircon sales had transferred to Argos and were under a different brand name.

same for hubby - I bought him a camera which was supposed to be an upgrade on the model he had - he was very disappointed with it ( it was about £280) and kept complaining that it blurred all the photos - to be fair I thought it was hubby!
fast forward 9 months and we were on holiday and he got chatting to chap on a hop on hop off bus in Barcelona as he had the same camera and they started comparing photos - then other chap took hubbys and took some shots and vice versa - lo and behold the photos were blurred
so we popped back to Argos with my credit card receipt and explained the situation - chap could not have been nicer and immediately swapped it- we were fully expecting to have to have some money knocked off it for 9 months use- but no - a complete exchange or refund was offered and we chose exchange - it was a great experience and it turns out - hubby was correct- the camera was faulty - oops - big apology from me!
