Landlord asked me to go away for a week for repairs

Hi all! I have been on my rented flat for 10 years next mo th and have a very casual landlord and he's been great over the years. There's been an ongoing issues intermittently whereby my bathroom leaks into the shop below. They've temporarily put some disgusting looking Perspex over my tiling next to the bath as they realise what's wrong. In order to resolve the flooding going downstairs they need to rip out the bathroom and start again. This means I will have to leave for a week.y family don't have room for me and my other half, my son can go to his grandparents. This would mean staying in a local hotel or maybe a nice idea to go away for the week. Would I be within my right to ask for some for of compensation as I'm having to leave my home for a week? Thanks all x

The landlord should provide the alternative accommodation.

write back saying you will be happy to vacate for a period not exceeding 7 nghts subject to your approval of the alternative accomodation the landlord provides.

You should continue to pay your usual rent during this period..

Reply to the landlord 'Sure, not a problem, good to see the bathroom getting sorted, which hotel were you planning on placing me in?' :)

The fact your landlord is sorting out the issue and redoing the whole bathroom suggests he falls into the 'above average' category. Since you've been there ten years and you sound happy with him, i'd initially try a softer approach.

However, if you can't afford alternative accommodation, or the week isn't appropriate for going away, i'd go with G_M's post.

    Are you having a laugh?

Why would the OP pay rent and then expense elsewhere?

I'd leave the perspex on if the client couldn't give me a week to do repairs. If no holiday to take all year then it would stay that way I'm afraid. After 10 years house could probably do with a refurb, maybe time to give notice and do the place up.
Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.

It all depends on your expectations and your relationship with your LL. If you ask for compensation/hotel costs, is he likely to turn around and say never mind, I'll only fix the leak during the day and you'll miss out on a brand new bathroom and continuing good relationship with your LL?

Or he could agree to the compensation under pressure, but then get really wind up and decide to give you notice.

Or you could consider a compromise, indeed seeing if a holiday during that time is possible, or staying at friend. If you really have no choice but to stay in a hotel, show that you've made a genuine effort to look for the best value for money functional hotel rather than seeing it as an opportunity to stay somewhere nice with breakfast included.

It doesn't need to be as drastic as moving out. I had my bathroom totally redone, completely gutted.
I had no where else to go so arranged with the guy doing the bathroom that the toilet would always be available to use at the end of each day and morning and weekends and the shower was out of action for max 2 days. In fact he said that on all his jobs he ensures where there isn't another toilet to use that the toilet will always be available to use in the evenings and weekends. I could still live there but I had a wash on the morning the shower was out of action rather than a shower.

If you are in the flat all day then it's probably a different story and you would need the landlord to provide alternative accommodation.

Just speak to the landlord and ask what he/she proposes.
