Firstly, you need to upgrade the firmware. Follow my instruction, don't make up your own.
You'll need an empty USB Flash drive:
Click here to download the latest firmware for the Equium P300 16T. Choose the option to Download through your Browser and then choose to Save the resulting file.
Un-zip/extract to the folder within. Within the folder are three files. We will need them later.
Now to the USB Flash drive;
Plug in into the laptop(or any PC) and then download and run Rufus
Make sure that the drive letter at the top corresponds to the Flash drive that you have plugged in and adjust the settings to those shown in the pic. Leave Cluster Size at it's Default. You can choose FreeDOS or MS-DOS.
When done, click Start.
Once complete, you'll need to copy the three files that we extracted earlier and send/drop them on to the newly bootable Flash drive.
Next, you need to set the Toshiba to boot from the Flash drive. Make sure that the machine is plugged into the mains. Then plug the Flash drive into the Toshiba and restart the machine. As soon as the machine begins to restart, press the F12 key.
That should bring up a Boot Menu, from which you can choose to make the USB Flash drive the first to be read. Choose to make it first, boot from the USB Flash drive and confirm again if you need to do so. The firmware update will begin. Do not touch the machine whilst this is taking place!
Once done, the machine will restart or you will be prompted to restart the machine. The most difficult bit done.0 -
Nifty
Thanks for that. Not going to attempt that today (of to the pub shortly) but can give it more attention over the weekend.
Just so as get can get things clear in my mind before pressing any buttons. If I choose to proceed and there will be a lead time for the extra RAM and the SSD to be delivered in the meantime can/should I do the firmware upgrade?

Have you updated the definitions yet?
Yes, do the firmware upgrade first. That way, if you !!!!!! the machine up, you can cancel the orders.0 -

Definitions appears to have updated. I can see new stuff. I suspect I have just been mislaid by the warning statement that appears in the Essentials window. I'll try the firmware update tomorrow (can't see any reason why it won't work)0 -
Almost two years later. In late Jan 2017 I bought a new Dell Inspiron Laptop. It is a good machine.
Anyway as to the fate of the Toshiba. It lanquished in the spare bedroom, unloved yet not unforgotten, whilst I showered my devotion on the Dell until the Summer of this year. I had done Niftys suggested software updates. But I had done nothing else. So I made the decision, tranfered all the files unto my backup hard drive, downloaded Ubuntu and went for it. It all worked fine except that it still took as long to boot up. So this week I ordered a 120gb SSD (Adata 120GB @ £19.00 from CCL hard drive) and a pair of suitable 2gb RAMS. The SSD arrived first so I installed that reloaded the Ubuntu OS and now the Tosh loads up in about 2 mins. The bigger RAMS arrived yesterday and whilst the Tosh can see them, but the machine wont get past the login stage, its trying its best to complete but the heat given off suggests a losing battle. Research suggets that is a common issue in trying to update old machines. So I'll be sending the RAM back for a refund and sticking with the factory supplied RAM.
By the way Ubuntu comes loaded with the Libre office suite and its all free.0 -

Balderdash!
I'm currently running an Equium P200 with Windows 7 on 4GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD.
No heat at all, as it's such a large device. Perhaps yours is clogged up with dust.
No need to spend more than £6.50 on 4GB(2 x 2GB) of RAM; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Memory-Ram-Laptop-DDR2-PC2-6400-6400S-800-MHz-200-Pin-SODIMM-Non-ECC-1-8V-2x-Lot/222631061314
Did you actually run the firmware update given to you back then? If so, you can install Windows 7 or 10.
PS, a two minute load time is still too slow. You should be looking at 30 seconds to a minute.0
