Tyre puncture kits, do you have one?
Options
so reading about these online most are marketed as 'off road use' and 'temporary' fixes.
but a lot of people have posed in forums that they used them on road tyres and see them as a permanent fix an they have lasted for the rest of the life of the tyre.
which type are best? you can get various different ones, like ones with sticky strips of rubber stuff and ones with plugs of different shapes and sizes and the like.
are they really much different than going to a tyre place and getting them to plug your tyre?
I only say I want one because I recently got a new to me car that I got a puncture in and when I went to put the spare on, that was also punctured, my fault for not checking it really.
They seem like a better and faster option than to mess around for 15 minutes out in the rain to change a tyre.

I bought one like this, Ebay 231447778779, before going on a trip abroad and used it twice, the repairs were still fine two years later when I sold the car. I also repaired a friends nearly new tyre when the garage would not repair it saying the hole was too near the edge of the tyre.
But make sure the glue is OK as these kits are often old stock.0 -

I bought the standard kit (several years ago) and still have it. I've needed to use it a few times over the years, for both myself and to help out others. I used it on my car 2 weeks after getting the car (from new) ... the tyre remained on the car, with no issues, until it was replaced about 45k miles later.0 -

Yes. The ones fitted at tyre places involve removing the tyre. They're a mushroom shape with the "stem" pulled through from the inside of the tyre to the outside so the "head" stays on the inside. End result is the air pressure in the tyre helps the mushroom patch to seal even better, something you can't do with a patch applied from the outside. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Why not?? Its only a tyre, what's the worst that could happen? A blow out, crash, serious injury or death.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0

Not to mention the possibility of structural damage, either from the original puncture, from running at low pressure before it's noticed, or from the repair itself. None of which will be seen during a DIY repair with the tyre on the rim.
99 times out of a hundred you'll probably be fine with them, but it's the 100th time that makes a 70mph blow out.
One of the funniest things I've seen on other forums are people who swear by these things while insisting that you should only ever use quality branded tyres because budgets are dangerous.0 -
The kit comes as standard with cars that don't have a spare wheel.
Never had to use it but the handbook advises it as only being effective for a puncture no larger than 4mm.
It also advises that after being used the car should not be driven at more than 50mph.

Don't you mean "change a wheel"?
I think changing a wheel in the rain would be a lot easier than repairing a tyre ....
but you knew what I meant, people always say change the spare tyre etc
you'd think it would be faster to change the WHEEL, but looking at youtube videos of these kits, if you have a nail you can see in the tyre its literally a 30 second job to plug it0 -
I would say that these are not for everyone and they are not suitable in all circumstances but i have deployed mine twice with great effect and have been able to get going again in less than half an hour. I can then re-assess the situation and take whatever measures are necessary i.e British standard puncture repair or replace tyre. For me, they are a far better and effective solution than faffing about with canisters of squirty foam.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

If you can see it. Most often, you'll have to take the wheel off first to examine the tyre.0
