Bonds (huh)... what are they good for?

I've been looking for a property fund that is in "direct property", ideally global, and struggled to find one.
It depends on your platform but I know what you mean. For me with Aviva for example, some look direct but turn out to be via equities (like this one). The only one I can see that is direct is this one, it's UK only though, rather than global. Much smoother graph though.

No doubt down to my incompetence.
Can you point me at a couple please?
Thanks
Look on Trustnet for OEIC/UT funds in the property sector. The direct property funds you want tend to have the lower Trustnet Risk values. You can confirm by looking at the Breakdown tab for any individual fund to ensure that it holds buildings rather than shares. One chosen at random is M&G Property Portfolio, another is Standard Life UK Real Estate.
There are also some ITs which are easier to find as there is a direct property sector on Trustnet. However their prices are obviously affected by the wider stock market, something that you dont want if looking for a bond alternative.
ETFs and index funds arent really applicable either, because again they hold shares rather than buildings.0 -
Do you look to P2P (less risk than equities probably but largely untested by a really nasty economic shock)?
Yep.
The "bonds" allocation of my portfolio is made up of Premium Bonds and P2P.
Bear in mind I have no idea what I'm doing, but (touch wood) it's served me well for the last couple of years.: )0 -
Thanks for the replies, will look further into the suggestions made for funds as (few) ETFs are offered vi our provider/product and no ITs.0

Most of the direct funds seem to be UK or Europe.
Morningstar has one OEIC in the 'Direct - global' category: "The Frontier Commercial Property", whose chart seems to stop in 2008.
There's one fund in 'Direct - other': "Aviva Investors Asia Pacific Prpty", region specific. For investment trusts there's just 'Direct - UK', 'Direct - Europe' and 'Direct - Asia Pacific', there's no global funds.
Why are there no direct North America funds?0 -
It doesn't answer your question but Citywire have another easy to use filter for ITs
