Selling to the Council

Hi All,

I wanted to start a separate thread from my other to see if anyone has ever sold to their local council and how the found the experience.

We bought our house almost 3 years ago and found that instead of being a 50/50 split of owner/ tenants, we are in fact the only owners.

4 of the tenants are absolute nightmares and I feel that their behaviour and way of living has decreased the value of our property.
Plus the number of visits from both council and police means we will have to mentions these problems.

We think that selling to the council is a better option, but our local doesn't have a buying scheme so its on a case by case basis.
we are going to approach them by letter but just wanted to know if anyone had any experience.

thanks!

  • If you really want to move then it sounds like selling to the council might be a good idea.

However please don't think that this kind of thing just happens with council tenants.

My life since buying my new-build home has been plagued by one particular set of terrible neighbours right next door.

When I bought my house it was at the opposite end of the development to the social housing (just by chance) and right next to the "luxury 4 bedroom show home".

The house was bought by a local man and I was looking forward to him and his family moving in, but they never did. Instead they decided to rent the property for such a large amount of rent that I was expecting young professionals with kids to move in.

I never thought that a family with six kids who were on benefits and have no idea how to behave were going to move in. This family have literally been the bane of my life and I just hope that when their tenancy comes up for renewal this year that it won't be renewed.
