'Wild Camping' recommendations please?

Options
We recently invested in a bell tent and we're looking forward to getting lots of use from it this spring/summer.

We stayed at a really lovely wild camping place in September and loved the fact that there was so much space around us, no cars on site, taken by quad to our pitch and could barely hear the other campers let alone see them, the kids and dogs could run free.... does anyone have recommendations for similar sites? Anywhere in the UK (we're definitely looking to go to the jurassic coast for some fossil hunting!)....

Thanks! :)

I've never heard of a 'wild camping site', before. Wild camping usually means pitching a tent in a quiet out of the way place, somewhere that you walk to carrying your kit in a rucksack. Arrive late, leave early, leave no mess. Usually in the corner of a field, in a wood, or up in the hills where no one is likely to see you.

Have a look at https://www.walkingforum.co.uk there are people on there who might be able to help. You can read without joining, but if you want to ask a question you need to join. It's free.

    I love skip diving.
    :D
  • Likewise, I've never thought 'wild camping' involved a 'site' with other campers at all!

I wonder if this website might be helpful.
Some sites look conventional, others very small sites on farms.
    Several near Jurassic coast.
I would imagine inland ones might be less visited?
The one near Shaftesbury (inland Dorset but lovely area, have friends in the town) mentions wild camping:

  • I wild camp a lot in the UK and abroad but more the up a mountain, in a field, in the woods type of thing never heard of a commercial wild camp site.

I am interested to know more, can you provide the name of the site that you describe in your fist post? It might help people understand your question more and offer similar suggestions. It also means people like me might also find a new site to camp at without dragging my gear a few thousand feet up a mountain etc.
  • Interesting I have just found this website listing some commercial nearly wild camping sites

    Good find.

We tend to use campsites with the minimum of facilities.

We stayed at a camping site in Masham that had four stars awarded by some organisation or other. To us it was cramped, over-organised, hell.

Whilst in no way "wild" by itself - in fact it has good facilities cafe and access, this site does have quite a few secluded wooded pitches round its periphery that would allow you to step away from the traditional camp site experience:

IIRC you can book a wooded pitch in advance but last time I was there it was off high-season so I was able to roll-up and choose one.

Also, Western Isles of Scotland - Go there choose your beach/loch and they will be very happy if you spend a few quid in the local bar/shop. Wild camping is very much welcomed in many places.
