Got credit card debt, gave cash to ex. He will not pay me back despite promising he would. I have numerous text messages stating he would.
He has now inherited some money & dumped me.
How do I get what is owed to me? He lives in EU. I don't have any spare cash at all.
My credit rating is worthless. I am such a fool, I already know that. My family are totally unaware of what has happened.

I think more than likely without a proper signed legal agreement, you would struggle to get anywhere recovering the debt through the courts, the fact that your ex lives in another country would further complicate matters. Even if you had such an agreement getting this through court, then enforcing the judgement maybe expensive (lawyers), slow and fruitless
Your subject mentions IVAs , is it the case you have a current IVA(individual voluntary arrangement, setup by an insolvency practitioner), in this case I would expect the repayments would go into this anyway. If you aren't in an IVA but are having debt problems you need to address these(and address assuming you'll get nothing from ex)0 -
I know of one or two IP's who, if you were in an IVA with them, would definitely consider pursuing your ex for the money using cross border insolvency law, but that of course may be easier said than done.
If you are not in an IVA, or other debt solution, then you need to take independent advice on your options. I can highly recommend The Debt Counsellors Charitable Trust, who can be contacted on 0300 456 2726. Other organisations are available of course.0 -
I'd imagine it getting tricky quickly if text messages are all you have, proving they are genuine for instance (and all replies from his phone were actually him). I'd wish anyone chasing this the best of luck(I mean one official letter and he could give up and pay up, or fight it all the way), but I wouldn't want to bet the whole debt solution on it0
