I can confirm they continue to honour existing ones.
  • If it's a donor account, it doesn't matter about the "best offer" surely?.

I just wondered if any banks have incentive offers of any kind to open a new count without switching? I thought this would be the best place to start.

I think Santander stopped accepting new direct debit mandates to pull money into their Everyday Saver account some time ago (which is why they were removed from the list in the thread that grumbler linked earlier) although they may continue to honour existing ones.

Login to Santander. top menu "payments & transfers". left side "pull money in from an external account". select everyday saver from the drop down menu (assuming you already have one) and you get."To link an external account to your Santander account, please call us on the number shown above."

I did call the number about a year ago - and the lady on the other end of the line didn't have a clue what to do. It took her about 15 minutes to find out that I needed some paper form to fill in and send them, then it took a week for the form to arrive as it wasn't available online.

And what do they say when you ring??

The Everyday Saver info page says
    Deposits
Minimum opening and account balance of £1, maximum of £2 million. Deposits can be made at any time via standing order, one-off payments or online transfers.

No mention of DDs - unless they are covered by 'online transfers' , but I'm taking that wording as not including DDs. Happy to be corrected though!

Edit - cross-posted with Grumbler above - who implies DD was possible about a year ago?

Yes, it was possible, but even then you had to jump through hoops.
I think the information is correct that they pulled this option, but just failed to clean up everything.

It is a long time since I went through this and it was a long difficult process. But having read in two threads that it was no longer possible I went to look and you still get the message I posted.

Am I right in stating that the First Direct incentive doesn't require the transfer of Direct Debits??

I've been looking at this one myself as I'm in a similar situation to the OP.

Yes, it's still there. But is it still valid advice or is it just some legacy detail they haven't updated?

No way of telling without ringing - but I have sent a secure message (don't want to bother ringing) saying that I want to set up a linked account and can they send me the form to nominate one. I'll report back on what they say!
