You go on a drive, with an IAM volunteer observer. He gives you a verbal report on your driving skill.

Hope your IAM group is better organised than mine :(
I was given a time. Unfortunately not all of the observers turned up and I was told I would have to wait 60 minutes until the next time slot.

  • You will meet some pretty relaxed person who has got used to putting his life into someone else's hands and ket you drive him around for about 45 minutes.

Generally he will not give feedback as you drive, but you may pull up and he'll make some observations. It depends on how confident and careful you are.

Things that came out with me was coming up to junctions too quickly so I was stopping and looking, whereas he pointed out coming up slowly gives you time to look and then you often don't need to stop at a give way.

I knew my driving was sub-standard, as most people do in their heart of hearts, so having the little bits and pieces confirmed was not a problem. I got complimented on some things and other suggestions were made that hadn't occurred to me. It was enough to make me sign up to the course and I finally got to learn how to brake, change gear and then go round a corner without needing to adjust speed and happily drive at the speed limit rather than over it while still having the fun of annoying "faster drivers" by getting places ahead of them.

Had the assessment yesterday and it was definitely a good move
The observer was an ex-copper (with 25 years experience)
I was given an overall ""VERY SAFE AND GOOD STANDARD SHOWN THROUGHOUT"
Though a few minor faults including ocassionally, crossing my arms when steering (not a good idea because if the airbag goes off - it can break your arms !!) Plus - I cut a few corners at junctions when out in the open countryside - and also, my positioning on bends was too far towards the middle of the road....
    just one question though
I would swear that when I booked the assessment (just before Christmas) - the website offered free (12 months) membership of IAM for anyone taking the assessment - it no longer mentions this fact ???
