Reading New Smart Meters
Eon fitted two new smart meters whilst I was a customer. However, I changed to British Gas with the Cheap Energy Club Collective last year. British Gas now want to fit THEIR Smart meters which includes ripping out the Eon ones. I intend shopping around when my fixed rate expires so does this mean I constantly have to have meters changed? What a waste! Also British Gas now want a meter reading. The Eon monitor does not work and I do not know which buttons to press on the outside meters.... A, B or numbers. No instructions left. Is this progress? Who will ultimately pay for all this? Ah yes, us.

If E.ON gave you the same meter(s) as they fitted with us (Secure Liberty 100 for electric, not sure about the gas) press 9 on the keypad(s) for the current total.
As far as new meters every time, presumably they consider your existing meter to be just another legacy 'dumb' meter and are offering an upgrade as part of their roll-out? Unless they are offering to fit a "SMETs 2" compatible meter (which will allow switching without loosing smart functionality once the infrastructure is in place later this year) I'd suggest fobbing them off for now.3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day). Smart meters are not compulsory.
Simply tell British Gas that you are refusing their offer of smart meters.
To read your eon fitted smart meter, you can download instructions for your model online.
As you say, what a waste or money that we are all paying for and this farce is likely to go on for several years yet!0 -
Meters introduced this year will have cross supplier functionality.0

Secure Liberty 100 smart electric. One push of button 9 will set the meter scrolling. The second screen is the reading eg. "0000015.6 " also shows "han kwh" so on a 5 dial register the reading would be 00015.
Gas smart Secure Liberty has a pitfall for the unwary because it shows gas reading as kwhs as well as units. Only the reading showing M3 is needed. Same procedure , press button 9 to get the meter scrolling. 00255.453 M3 the reading is 00255.Should be the second screen but on occasions the second screen was the gas kwhrs. That reading is the gas units used multiplied by 11 to get kwhs so would be a huge bill if that reading gets submitted0 -

Been there, done that, got the badge, tee shirt and diploma.
The rule I've seen is that when having a smart meter fitted by a different supplier, that smart meter will revert to a dumb meter until such time as the new energy company can read it. Presumably, they need to change the meter so they can read it. However I don't understand that: As far as I know there is only one local receiver/transmitter and the energy companies themselves don't maintain it. However my smart meter was installed by the energy company's contractor. One for the energy gurus methinks.
On my smart meter I simply press the number 9 and the second screen which comes up is the meter reading. Watch out for the decimal point.0
