When you get to Paddington rail station, consider heading for the Paddington tube station on the Hammersmith and City Line, not the Circle. H&C trains heading East will go straight through to Kings Cross St Pancras. If you take a Circle Line train it will still get you there but you often have to change at Edgware Road, which is the end of the line for a lot of trains these days
They're kind of at opposite ends of Paddington station, so ask someone on the platform gateline to point you in the right direction for whichever you choose. It's usually about 15-20 mins on the tube between the two, although the line often gets snarled up with congestion.
For some reason TFL's planner always suggests Bakerloo to Oxford Circus and then Victoria line to Kings Cross. It seems crazy suggesting changing trains when there's a direct service.0
