I use a set of opensource applications to rip, and re-encode from my DVD's to avi's (as part of the re-encoding I shrink it to fit on my palm....)

There's a good guide including all the links to the software here

but bear in mind that the instructions include the shrinking for a palm. If its for something else, don't use the supplied processing settings.....

  • While this thread is OK at the moment, just be careful not to give advice about how to do this with potected copyrighted DVD's as this is against the site rules.

    thanks

Everyone is entitled to make their own personal backup. The process of making an AVI should be fine - it would be selling/distributing it that would be a problem. Making an AVI is akin to making a tape of an LP for your car stereo

Look up an application called Gordian Knot. In fact it's a suite of applications. By far the best out there. Also go with the xViD codec it's slightly superior to DivX nowadays. Also there's AutoGk, it's like Gordian Knot but much more user friendly/less complex. Personally of the two I use Gordian Knot.

Look on https://www.doom9.net for guides on how to use it.

Firstly....thanks for all the constructive advice, tanfastic as always.

Secondly....no it's not for converting copyrighted material, just in case this needed clarification.

    Adios

I use Guardian Knot a lot, fantastic program to convert avi to mpeg4 (XViD or DIVX)

I do use it for backup only and in fact backing up a home movie as we speak on another pc from VHS to DVD-R (Liteon DVD standalone Writer) to XViD.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you
