URGENT HELP! - Can I still use my old Midland cheque book?

I have an HSBC account, but my last cheque book was issued by Midland Bank a few years ago. I can't remember if HSBC ever sent me a new cheque book, but I still have more than half my Midland cheque book left unused, so I'm not sure they would have sent one out.

Can I still write a cheque using this old Midland cheque book?

Are the sort code and account number the same as now? If so, no problem.

I've just written a cheque from an Abbey National cheque book from 2000.

Yea, all details are the same... no changes there. I think I stopped using the account for a while, and when I re-started using it, I was using only online banking and my debit card.

Really, why not just phone them and ask - you'd probably get a quicker (and more definitive) answer than posting on here?

Is there a general problem with cheque books? Everybody I know has been stuck recently with an empty cheque book and no replacement either automatic or requested. They do come eventually but does anybody know what is going on? Have the banks centralised the cheque book production? Is there a glitch in the system? 'or is this a ploy by the banks to stop us all using cheques?

Generally a cheque book is issued after a certain number of cheques in your present book have been cashed.
The problem is say that it does this after cheque number 10 in a book , if cheque 10 is destroyed or never used then an automatic book is never reordered.

Some banks have a text service whereby you can order a book by texting your bank.
