I didn't know that Costco were still charging for a membership! Learn something new everyday!

That aside, they presumably have lower profit margins than high street retailers on their items due to the lower prices? I suppose the membership fees would compensate for that somewhat.

Still, depending on your returns % you may very well be an unprofitable customer for them and run the risk of them refusing your business in the future. Talking about other people in a hypothetical situation is a bit academic..

Yes Costco charge a membership fee and you have to forefil certain qualifying criteria or trade to gain membership. They don't let in anyone!
Costco are massive they are not losing money trust me!
It just I see many others abusing the system. I have a couple of legit returns and get the grief, (though it wasn't my local store and a very new store). Though like I said this differs from store to store.

    Yes, anything from £28 to £62 + vat p.a.

And they are not always cheaper.

Though you can buy online at a 5% surcharge, according to their website.

So it seems like you are effectively paying for a 5% discount?

On line is completely different to in store.

A lot of things on there are not sold in store and vice versa.

Yes this is probably why they have clamped down.

They once told me at returns that lots of people return Christmas decorations and lights in January.

What annoys me is this. Is any outlet (Costco included) advertising a policy to get your custom then not honouring it or trying not too.
Costco state they are guaranteeing everything I buy. Not my first my first 5 purchases a year etc & I have to keep the rest if I am not satisfied etc.
What it is I feel Costco have started off with the USA aspect (as over in the states it really is unlimited). However with the new stores here in UK they trying to deter you from taking stuff back and steering the way on returns to a more UK direction.
I must admit it is only on new stores I have had this return treatment. On the older exisisting ones there hasn't really been too much trouble.

I know someone who does (did?) take his TV back each year for a refund, and spend the money on a new one. I do hope that Costco have clamped down on this!

I've never had even a slight query on any returns. They do look your records up - mainly to check the price you paid for the item (and that you did buy it rather than nicked it!)

Whenever visiting my local costco. I always have a look what people are returning.

I was at the membership counter renewing my membership. The returns counter is next to it. A woman returned all these saucepan sets used. The lazy sod hadn't even washed them up before returning. Absolutely stunk the place out.

There is a certain group of people which all the time keep taking stuff back and using Costco as a rental place!
