caring cutlery-adapted for children with dyspraxia-please help!!

Hello fellow moneysavers!;)
I am desperate for some "caring cutlery" (or very similar) which has indents to teach children (or indeed adults) how to correctly hold their cutlery. My daughter has just been dignosed as dyspraxic, and I need to get at least 2 sets (1 for school 1 for home) and they are quoting at least £7 per item plus postage and packing, so around £50.
I do not know if this is the right forum to post this on, so please feel free to move it if it is not!

Thanks for any help in advance,
Emsywoo123:money:

I'll be looking for the answer to this, my son has dyspraxia so this could be useful.
  • Try your local Social Services. They should have a section which deals with providing equipment for people with disabilities. May come under Housing - search your local authority website.
  • hi there

I got special cutlery provided free for my son when he was little by the NHS Occupational Therapist!

Speak to the Disabled Living Foundation, they have an excellent helpline and can give advice and details/cost of everything that can possibly be of help for any type of disability

  • Hi I am an Occupational Therapist so hope I may point you in the right direction. Firstly if you have an OT try asking them as sometimes buy them in bulk to sell to parents as cheaply as possible. If not they may also know whether any local firms sell then.

Also do you have a local disability shop? They usually have scooters, riser armchairs etc. They may have some or if not should be able to order them in.

Boots use to sell something similar but I have just looked online and they seemed to have stopped. Maybe worth asking in store incase they have any left.

This website sells the adult set for £11.70 plus p+p £7.50. www.euromedical.co.uk. The junior version costs £6.25 per item.

I am sure I have seem some very similar in one of the kiddies catalogue. If I find them I will let you know. HTH

Thank you, this is helpful, she does not have an NHS occupational therapist, NHS wouldn't touch her with a bargepole, as they decided she was "too young" for an assessment!
any idea why the kids set is so much dearer than an adults?

    Hi There

I would ask your school to provide for use when there (they will have a budget for this) and yes get in touch with a paediatric OT at social services - or the councils child care services (we dont like to be called social services anymore!) as they maybe able to provide or give advice.

    Hope this helps

MagsyB - paediatric OT at what was social services and is now children services

I didn't get mine free - but the NHS centre where my daughter was assessed for dyspraxia sold them to me for £5 per knife and fork set (approx 6 mths ago) as someone here mentioned, some depts buy in bulk and sell onto patients at a reasonable price.
I have a set (cream colour handles) that are individually wrapped and still unopened which I am more than willing to donate if you'd wish?

PM me with your postal address if you decide you want them Hun. :D
