Reliability expectations for a 2 year old car

Hi,

I'm just after peoples thoughts on this. I bought a Hyundai Ix35 at a few month old. The car is now 2.5 years old and in the last 12 months has had 11 visits so far for warranty issues including:

EGR valve faulty causing car to go into limp mode at high speeds
coolant loss
reversing camera fault
car leaking water into boot
problem with gearbox causing car to struggle to go into 4th and 6th (took dealership over a month to repair after getting Hyundai UK involved).

The latest issues started last week and the car is now back at the dealership. Power steering keeps failing (intermittent - sometime from startup, sometimes fails whilst driving). I have all sorts of warning lights on the dash about ABS, power steering, downhill assist etc, cruise control has stopped working.

I have had to have Hyundai UK customer services involved a couple of times already due to dealerships taking several attempts to fix things. For the gearbox issue, the dealer tried telling me I'd worn the clutch and the repair was chargeable. After getting Hyundai involved, hyundai investigated and found the gearbox faulty, replaced a couple of synchro rings and offered me my next service for free.

I wouldn't expect a car of this age to have so many different issues. Would I be within my rights to ask Hyuundai to consider either exchange the car like for like or pay me what it would cost me to buy a like for like model?

Thanks

Thats the bit that has me wondering what the vehicle has been used for, not saying you've abused it but for synchros to be worn at 2.5 years, unless the car covers really high mileage or is in heavy traffic continually, isn't normal, wonder what it's previous ownership and use was?

EGR valves on modern Diesels are blocking regularly, so long as they sorted it out and continue to do so whilst under that long warranty it's something that now goes with Diesel ownership.

Whats the mileage on the car? Im guessing it may have had a previous owner abuse it somewhat especially with the syncros worn

I've owned the car since 6 month old. It's at 55,000 now but most of my driving is motorway commutes. I don't drive the car hard either. I've never worn out a clutch or damaged a gearbox in nearly 20 years of driving. Owned cars much older than this with far fewer problems.

The EGR valve thing - car is at mortorway speeds most of the time so can't see how the EGR valve would get blocked. The garage replaced it because the diagnostics they carried out when investigating the car going into limp mode told them it was faulty. However, replacing it didn't fix my problem. It ended up being a faulty fuel filter which had been fitted at the previous service that I questioned from the outset but they wouldn't listen until I got Hyundai customer services involved after 3 visits and no fix.

What concerns me is the amount of different issues I've had with the car. My last car was 3 times the age with going on for 150,000 miles when I traded it in for this and I barely had a problem in 5 years of owning it (and it was french too :rotfl:)

It's at 55,000 now and I bought it at 10,000.

Once Hyundai got involved, they decided the synchro's needed replacing but didn't mention wear and tear and there was no charge for the work. They also replaced the clutch at the same time as they claimed the synchro issues had caused clutch damage.

They were also very apologetic and offered me my next service free of charge. If it had been wear and tear and due to driving style, they may have carried out the repair as a goodwill gesture but offering to foot the bill for a £400 service seems unlikely surely?

EGR valves don't block on diesels sub 80-100,000 miles unless you spend a lot of time doing short journeys which would tie in with the synchromeshes failing. My last Mondeo I bought at 3 years old with 90,000 miles on and at 110k gave the EGR a clean. At 150k it was still clean as a whistle. My current Mondeo that I bought at 2 years old with 38k on the clock now 5 years later with 117k on has had no problem with the EGR. I don't do short journeys.
