In practice the third party insurer will bend over backwards to sort your car out quickly and at no inconvenience to you, and it's cheaper all round for all of us because a bunch of sharks won't be cashing in.
Plus by letting Direct Line sort it out you won't have the very real danger of them refusing to play ball when a bill for £3000 for extended for no reason car hire lands on their doorstep and the sharks come to you for it instead.
I am not after BMW or high executive car but do need Saloon car for work and family needs. Small cars or £20/day are not fit for purpose.
Will I still end up with possible loan sharks if I get courtesy car through my own car insurance?0 -
Ed and Da Couch: yes you do as I did in Feb last year.
OP the 3rd party insurer will provide a similar car to that off the road but only for 5 days after the agreed settlement, another reason to haggle on the settlement cost to draw it out a wee bit. Within reason of course.0 -

Yes.
You must have received an exgratia payment either from the third party or your own Insurer.
There is no reason for the other party to pay you any money to compensate you for not having a car when you don't need a car.
If you needed a car, they would offer a car, if you don't need a car they don't need to offer0 -
You could always get a quote from your preferred garage and put it to the third party insurance. I did it that way because I wanted to use the dealer and get genuine parts rather than copies.0

The chap at the body repair shop where my car was assessed told me about the £20 a day in lieu. He stated that it was the case overall but the insurers don't really want it to be widely known.0
