Does insurance cover for malicious damage? is it accidental?

Your insurance premiums will also now be higher for the next few years.
    Yes and yes.

Assuming the sofa can't be repaired cheaply (worth checking before putting in a claim) then in return for her excess and possibly slightly higher premiums for a few years the OP gets a shiny new expensive sofa to replace her written out eleven year old one. Some would class that as a pretty good outcome in itself.
  • I've contacted them and they've said it's covered so they're coming to assess it. It will either be mended or replaced. If it's mended it might be better for me to just pay it and cancel the claim which I'm allowed to do.
She did say that they'd only pay for the broken one so I quoted your post paddyandstumpy and said I found the information on a consumer advice website. She said she'd check with the manager. Fingers crossed. Thanks x
  • OK but you do realise you have made a claim even though you offer to pay yourself?

Even if you pay for it yourself, it's still a claim you now need to disclose.

I can't see how they can see they will definitely cover it, seeing as you don't know the cause yourself. I'm sure they meant they're sending out an assessor to see if it's covered as, if it turns out to be due to the age of the sofa then it wouldn't be covered. Nor if it's fully design which, on an 11yo sofa, is unlikely.
