It sounds like you are treating your daughter as a cash cow.

Claiming on her behalf, not telling her about the claims, giving her an allowance?

She is your daughter, not an income stream.

Why put in about a girl's holiday unless it is to trigger a reaction?

My apologies if this is a genuine question but this saga has one too many dud notes for me and is too disingenuous to take seriously.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I am not going to judge the OPs motives. What I am going to say is that as her DD is in higher education she is not entitled to Child Benefit. Receiving child benefit up to age 20 is in non-advanced education, which she is not. So tomorrow you must tell the child benefit office as you will now have to pay back money owed from September/October when DD started higher education. Also she can only get the income related ESA when a calculation is applied which includes her student loan/grant. So the ESA is reduced. Your DD may indeed need you to support her with money if she is liable to give it away, burn it, spend it all in one day or any other thing that a person with a personality disorder would do. I imagine she is in adult services if things are that bad, and now has a new diagnosis... conduct disorder is really an 'emerging' label so in adulthood it changes. That being said as she has a statement she is entitled to various educational support until she is 25. So make sure she uses the student disability service at her place of study. Many students with some form of mild/moderate learning disability and personality disorder can study and achieve, with support. With regard to the actual assessment I can say without fear of contradiction she will be assessed and they will address the questions to her not you. It is really different once they are an adult, hard as that may be for you, but it is how it works. Even severely autistic young people are interviewed, at a level and asked questions of. I fully understand that it is hard to see how a once child with such difficulties can find her own way in the world and not be in trouble or a victim, but she must do some of these things for herself so she can learn to manage the risk. Hope things go well for her with her course.
Remember when you judge someone, it does not define them ... You define yourself :j

Would agree naturaljazz- I have a personality disorder diagnosed later in life (I'm 36) and i have anger management and anti social behaviour problems. However I am close to finishing my undergraduate degree- currently on track for upper second class honours and then I plan on doing a Masters so it's definitely possible to achieve with problems like this- I know of others in the same boat who are also doing well. I do however have a solid support network in place and without that support network I would really struggle.

  • I suspect you might need to get your daughter reassessed if you can. Needs often change as children approach adult hood. The focus really should be on helping the young person get as close as possible to independence.

My son is 20, has ASD, ADHD and anxiety and has needed a lot of support with education. He's still trying to achieve a level three qualification in spite of being highly intelligent and I am presently just about there with getting him to apply to UCAS. Its been somewhat stressful to complete lol. He will need support in Higher Ed as well, but there is more support available in Higher Ed for those that need it.

My son gets DLA (Mid care low mobility) and was awarded ESA without an assessment. I did have help filling in the ESA forms though. He has problems with hallucinations, sleeplessness, socialising, walking, travelling and stress (can collapse). But if you meet him, he might not seem an obvious candidate for ESA.

I hated it, but I did involve him in decisions about benefits, he is fully aware of what was said in paperwork and why it was necessary to explain things. To me that's treating him as a person. I asked him if he wanted to deal with benefits, and he said no, he couldn't cope (to be honest, he does have problems with explaining things at the best of times). I also give him an allowance. I'd love him to be financially able, but every time I've tried to give him more control over his money, he just spends it madly (no delayed anticipation at all) and would get into trouble quickly. I hope one day, this will change and will continue to make attempts to increase his ability to control what happens to him.

Indeed. My first feeling was that polly is taking the pee, and each new post will drip feed another little snippet of contention ;)
