Can't SORN car that's been bought today?

I thought you could SORN it with the new keeper supp?

My brother picked up a car today. It'll be sat on private property for a while & he went to declare it SORN but said it came up saying that this moment it can't be declared SORN as the owner hasn't declared him as the new keeper yet, or something to that effect.

So am i wrong then? I thought it didn't matter & you could declare it the day you bought it?

how can you declare it sorn until you own it (or the DVLA say you do) ? whilst the v5 is in someone elses name , they are responsible ,

await your v5 , then sorn it , keep car off road , or tax it

Only way of doing this seems to be via w w w.gov.uk/government/publications/v890-statutory-off-road-notification-sorn and ticking 'The V5C or V62 has already been submitted to register the vehicle in my name' -

Otherwise it'd require submitting a SORN with the current V5C ref which would be cancelled when the new V5C is issued or risking it and waiting for the new V5C in the post

I know which one I'd rather do

Ah right. I always thought you could do it based off some reference on the new keeper supp.

I did this ealier this month, sent in the V5C and the SORN form in the same envelope. Got the new V5C back one day, the SORN confirmation the next.
