You'd ask the new/balance transfer card to transfer from the card you have a balance on/owed money too. You tell them the card number of the card you want to pay.

In effect, your new card makes a payment for you to clear the balance.

You might call them to do this or do it online.

I've come back to this thread as I've closed my Barclaycard and will shortly need to apply for another BT card.

Just want to check my understanding of this. If I get, for example, a Halifax BT card and want to transfer £3000 from my TSB card, I instead request a £6000 balance transfer putting the TSB card £3000 in credit and hopefully get that +ve balance transferred to my current account.

I imagine I should be careful to time this to avoid debits from the account reducing the +ve balance resulting in a request for a transfer in excess of the +ve balance figure.
