Debit/Credit card for Holland

Hi,

This is a weird question, but was in Holland recently and found my cards to be useless in supermarkets and municipal card parks. As a consequence I ended up using more expensive car parks (NCP ones) and in Holland it does make a big difference over time.

My question is there a card that works in municipal car parks/supermarkets!! Looking online it seems Maestro cards are the only ones which work and as far as I can tell you can't get a new Maestro card in the UK! If there is it would save me and others money

The situation is as you discovered. Cards issued in the UK incur fees to the merchant, and Dutch merchants (other than those in the tourist market) just don't accept such fees. You just have to use cash usually, and only park where you can use cash or a UK card, or get a Dutch or other account with a Maestro card if you go there a lot.
