Charged through an expired debit card

Is it normal to be charged through an expired debit card?

I signed up for a trial and cancelled it before the end.

Now the card has expired and the company has recently used that card to charge me and the bank has paid them.

Thankfully it wasn't much, but I just wanted to know if that's normal.

I called the bank and was surprised to hear that it's normal because this was a subscription, despite the fact that I cancelled the trial.

  • Some service providers get new card details/expiry dates from a service known as Visa Account Updater.

This is largely irrelevant though, if you cancelled during a trial, they shouldn't have taken a payment and you can request a refund from your bank.
  • I agree with the above reply.

But it is possible for a payment to be taken from an expired card number - continuous payments need to be cancelled by you or you need to ask your bank to cancel the authority before any further payments are taken.
