Hello all,

i bought a second hand Ford Fiesta (11 months old car) last year Christmas. the dealer told me they will service the car before my car collection/delivery. I was so glad because i will never forget to service my car again because every Christmas will remind me to service my car before or after Christmas (12 months with 1 month tolerant).

so, this year, i booked my service appointment yesterday, and take my service booklet out now. to my  HORROR , my car last service was last year November.

this mean the dealer serviced the car when the car sold to dealer, NOT before deliver the car to me. and this mean i miss the 12 month service interval and void my warranty!

service booklet say: "Every 12 months or every 12500mi (20,000km) whichever comes first"
how long is the tolerance? 1months? 3months?

the car last service was 4400miles, and i drove little on this car, current mileages is about 6500miles only. but it exceeded 12 month service interval (14month+) because i was misleaded that the car will be serviced before delivered.... i cannot go back to the dealer that sold me the car, because i had moved to midland, the dealer was at southern, 5 hours drive away.

is there any chance to fix this problem?
i dont want to loss the Ford warranty because the car is 23 months old only, and the mileage is very low at 6500miles.

many thanks.

  • You can't turn back the clock, it maybe be an issue it may not.

But hopefully there will be no issues and no need for a warranty claim.

What's the service interval wording for your car in the service booklet?

it will say something like "12,500 miles or 12 months whichever comes first".

The point is 12 months have elapsed.

There is no set tolerance. However most dealers would allow a 'reasonable' tolerance.

It helps a lot if you have always had the car serviced by the dealer rather than an independant garage - they then think of you as 'their' customer who has spent money with them, and they'll be more flexible in their interpretation.

It will also depend why you are making a claim under the warranty,

If they are looking for an excuse not to undertake an expensive warranty repair, they can use the failure to comply strictly with the service interval.

If it's a minor, cheap warranty claim, they may simply think "This costs us very little, we'll keep the customer happy and overlook the late service."
  • Warrantys only something like 12 on trim and cheap stuff anyway.

Don't know about Ford but I had a Mazda serviced 2 months after the due date, because I had been overseas. Mazda told me it wasn't a problem as they allow some leeway.

Phone Ford's customer service dept. and ask.

Maybe contact the selling dealer and politely explain that when they "serviced" the car before you picked it up, they forgot to stamp the service record book. You could post it, they stamp it, post it back.

Trim and most other "cheap stuff" is covered by the full 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.
    The only exclusions are:
    •Drive belts
    •Spark plugs
•Oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, diesel particulate filter and fuel filters.
    •Wiper blades
•Light bulbs. (Xenon headlamp bulbs and fascia / instrumentation illumination are covered for the full duration of the Ford Base Warranty)
    •Remote control handset batteries
•Glass is covered by the Ford Base Warranty for up to 1000 miles / 1500 kilometres. Glass replacement due to heating element failure is covered throughout the Ford Base Warranty period.

When I had to make a claim a couple of years ago on a 2 year old Ford as far as I know they didn't even look at the service history.

It was done at a Ford dealer which wasn't was the car had every been serviced at.

Or speak to the dealer servicing it now and see if they'll fudge the date on this years stamp back a month then continue on next year
