It needs to be reset to factory conditions. This is an option in the setting app on the iPhone. If the current user hasn't put any password on the phone you can do this.
Will you be collecting the phone? If so, have them reset it before you part with your cash.0 -
There is always a risk that the phone can be locked out. An upgrade thats not paid for and a stolen phone etc.
Just because they show it working doesnt mean its all good.
If yout buying off some stranger on gumtree then expect the phone to stop working within a few weeks and if it doesnt its a bonus.
I presume your collecting in person and paying cash?
Not having it delivered? Save yourself the hassle and buy a refurbed one from a proper source.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
also, check that it's not locked to a network as they are a PITA to unlock if you are not the original owner.

HI. I've been burnt myself when buying a secondhand iPhone:
* Is the phone iCloud locked? If it is and the 'owner' does not have the login details then the phone is a paperweight and NOTHING can be done to make it a working phone. Walk away.
* Is 'find my phone' switched on? Same as above. The owner must turn it off before you purchase the phone otherwise you could end up with a brick.
* Is the phone blacklisted? Google 'check iphone imei'. Again, blacklisted = unusable.
* Is the phone network locked? If it is, is it on the network you want to use it with? iPhones can be unlocked - depending on original network, allow up to 10 days and £20. Hopefully less on both counts. In my experience, EE is the network that takes the longest and charges the most.
Don't take the owners word on the above. Check it on the phone yourself. If you don't know how to, then Google 'buying a secondhand iPhone'. There are loads of guides online. The best tip I can pass on is also the most socially awkward one! Ideally, get the current owner to 'restore' the phone in front of your eyes so that you can be confident everything is aboveboard. This will take a good few minutes to do - but it will prove to you that the phone is genuinely account free and ready for you as the new owner to take it on. This process is also handy for showing that the phone CAN be restored and can connect to iTunes...and doesn't crash out. Depending on storage and condition, a used iPhone 5S will sell on Gumtree for around £80 to £140...so protect your investment and check all of the above before parting with your cash

A good place to buy one is one of the well known second hand stores such as Game, Cash Converters, Cash Generators, etc.
At least then you have a physical store to take it back to if something does subsequently go wrong.0 -
I bought an iPhone 5s from EE less than a yr ago, yes they are deemed as old these days, but because it was, in their eyes, it was affordable to me. If it is this model you want, then consider asking in each of the phone shops how much one would cost, unlocked to their particular network. The next step would be to buy a sim independently, ad you can play around with the number of mins, text, data you want. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
