You could also call your bank and tell them it's an unauothorised transaction.

  • You're not due compensation from the agent. They've done nothing wrong. You said it was a Signature Holiday so it was a package and non payment by anyone wouldn't come into it. Even if you had just booked hotel only the agent wouldn't deal direct with the hotel so wouldnt be paying them anyway.
  • ok thanks all wasn't sure so just wanted a better idea of where I stood. have contacted the hotel now and if that gets me nowhere I shall contact my bank so again thanks for all your input.

When you use a debit card to cover incidentals it is normal for the hotel to charge an amount to the card and then refund you when you leave (as opposed to a CC where they put a hold on a certain amount). This amount can be anything from $50 to the cost of your stay. It strikes me that they charged you $250 for each night, which wouldn't surprise me for NYC.

The irony is that this charge may not hit your account until you've left. I'm sure they'll refund this once they realise they have not, but to speed things up give them a call using Skype or similar.

I would have phoned the hotel, it's a much quicker way of getting a response, emails can get ignored.

They can still ringfence on a debit card same as they do a credit card.
