New laptop with windows 10 and a Three Mobile Broadband dongle for data

Hello all,

I was hoping someone could give me a bit of advise about an issue I have. I purchased a new laptop and when it arrived I found out it had Windows 10 installed. I have a 3 USB dongle for my internet usage. Get through about 5Gb a month and this has 15Gb so never have a problem.

I had read about all the issues with Windows being very data hungry so I took the laptop to work and downloaded the Anniversary update via their wi-fi. Turned off auto updates, turned all the tiles off etc.

However, if I log on it will use 40Mb of data before the internet even opens and absolutely rinses my data. Sadly, I was unable to downgrade it to Windows 7 so I now have a laptop I cannot use for anything.

As a test I left it logged in whilst I had a shower, internet not open, nothing else running in the background. 2Gb had been used.

I am gutted as I feel I have wasted my money :(

Any help would be wonderful and truly appreciated.

It is a Lenovo B50-10

Thanks

Steve

Sounds like its trying to download further updates. I'd take it to a cafe / mcdonalds wherever and access a free wifi service and let it do what it needs to.

It wont do that every time you log on.

As you have 10GB to spare each month I can't see that downloading Windows updates will really be a problem even if you do it over mifi, I'd be surprised if the accumulated updates during a single month approach that size.

Settings, Windows Update, Advanced, turn off the option to share the updates with other users on your network or the internet.

Take your 3 sim into a 3 shop and ask about more data per month.

Last month they were doing 15meg - which is what you have - for £15 a month and the next offer was 40gig a month for £20 a month. This was in the shop but not on their website.

If you are worried about updates gobbling your data then why not do as you have already done and take it to work for a few days and let it do the updates there.

As another poster said, you only use 5gig and have 10gig to spare so there should be no problem.

As for update size - the biggest I have had downloaded to my machine was nearly 3gig which took up practically all the free space on my 32gig drive and I got moans about lack of space to complete the update - it had to be done again in bits.

Also how are you logging in to Win 10?

Is it via an "@outlook.com" account or a local user account?
Think the outlook.com login automatically connects to the Internet so it can register with Microsoft's servers (for parental settings and remote access features).

(I know I can log in with my Outlook.com address on my nephews Win10 box and my desktop wallpaper and customized settings are carried over.)
