Does anyone have any recommendations (ie companies they have used) for holiday home insurance for a house in the UK? I need buildings and contents insurance.

Have you tried the same insurer as your main home insurance?
Some insurers would offer cover as "an accommodation" for existing customers, as long as you keep the main home with them.
Or, try your local Broker (avoid Swinton).0 -
paddyandstumpy are right that quite often insurers will do this, so it is worth trying your existing home insurer who might give a multi-policy discount maybe?
But the risk is seen as different from main homes - as often you are not there all the time - so during periods of absence things can happen from burglary to a minor drip that actually results in major damage (at home you would have seen it before the image grew).
Most of the comparison engines and many insurers websites let you specify that the property is a second home when seeking quotes. A google will reveal them quickly enough.
As with choosing your home insurance - the balance between lowest cost and quality of service and overall claims attitude from an insurer are a difficult thing to quantify.
I know someone who has their second home insured through Barclays and has been happy.I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.0 -

This is the option that is generally best as if this is the policies tend to cross cover if you use the same Insurer. So if you take some extra items with you to the holiday home that are not covered by the HH policy, your Home Insurer will often cover them.
Obviously check the cover0 -
I'm in a similar position, looking for holiday home insurance, contents only. I've just had an online quote of £141 from Towergate Insurance from this link https://www.towergateinsurance.co.uk/holiday-home-insurance0
