my MIL wants to give us her old car when she buys a new one so i've been looking at insurance, mot, tax etc to see if it makes financial sense for us.

I've also been considering breakdown cover as we will be doing some long distance travel, way back when I had my own car and a different bank account i was covered by the AA.

I've used a price comparison site and all these random companies are coming up much cheaper than the AA, RAC or Green Flag.

I'm tempted to go with one of the big 3. but wondered what advice you all had?

AutoAid is often recommended by lots of folk on here ( myself included :) ) as long as you don't mind the "pay and reclaim" model. Personally I've been with them for years, can't fault them on either price or service.

Checkout the latest AA complaint thread, will you be happy with the relay option?

  • i've never had to use my breakdown cover. (when i had it).

ideally i'd like cover for home start, roadside assistance and to be towed to a garage.

towed to my destination or home would good but not if the price is too high as i'm sure we or my family could help out in a dire situation.

That's one thing I like about AutoAid - they'll take you the destination of your choice, doesn't matter how far away it is. On the couple of occasions I've had to use them, I asked them to take me to my local trusted mechanic, who is very conveniently a 3 minute walk from my house :-) On one occasion it was a 300 mile journey, but there was no quibbling. Dropped the car at the mechanic, walked home , got to bed. Next morning, walked down to the garage, chatted to the mechanic, sorted out what's what. Sure beats being stuck for the night in the middle of nowhere at the "Nearest Available Garage", which some recovery firms seem to do.

So what about Autoaid as recommended on this thread? All of that for just over £40?

It's not "pay and claim" any more. They now operate the same as other breakdown companies.

I have been with Autoaid for 10 years now and, like other members of our car club, have nothing but praise for them.

If you decide to go with one of the larger outfits, both AA and RAC give significant discounts in year one via cashback sites. Still not the cheapest, but not nearly so much price difference.

But it only applies to new customers, so don't auto-renew in year 2, switch to the other one via cashback again.

If you qualify for the CSMA, then Britannia Rescue is a good option too.

I have just renewed and it was £40.68, it's £42.54 for new customers.
