If you need more data:
A normal 3 Voice SIM with an All In One 10 add on. Of course you should only apply the add on the day before you are due to leave

If you need to tether;
http://store.three.co.uk/view/product/ql_catalog/threecatdevice/2454?tariff=20804 for £10.
Again only pop the SIM in and register for the Data reward the day before you are due to leave.0 -

(Although I've just switched to them and the 12 month contracts for 8gb and 30gb of data are good value).
you don't need to give notice, at the end of the 1st month you can leave without further notice0 -

I must have missed it but where can you get 300 Minutes, 3000 Texts and 12GB of Data for £20?0 -
I personally wouldn't go into a 3 shop to do this if you're not 100% sure what you want or how to go about it - 3 shop personnel are salespeople above all else, they are unlikely to be particularly interested in only selling you a 3 payg sim with £10 or £20 credit on it. You may come away with the impression that the PAYG avenue won't work for the US for 3 feel at home, or that you need to use 3 for a certain amount of time before being able to use feel at home abroad. Neither of these are true.
The irony is that after all this, I never used it there as emails and whatsap was all I needed, and was able to access wifi easily!0 -

Once you get the SIM, pop it into your device and navigate using your Browser to Three.co.uk/freedata. Register and that will get you a free data allowance to use abroad.
Any idea why the misconnect? Thanks.0 -
I did that using a new HSDPA dongle. Got to the welcome page which said to disable wifi, it would check compatibility and then kick off. However, on disabling wifi, I got a browser message that I wasn't connected to the internet, after which nothing.
Any idea why the misconnect? Thanks.
They had a problem with that page a while back. They fixed it.0 -

Many thanks for all of the replies, advice and suggestions.
I'm going to have a slow read through all of them (and the associated links) tomorrow morning.0
