AVG Free won't update

Usually I have no bother updating AVG and after checking for updates it does it automatically when I restart PC. However, I've restarted it twice now, and it still shows as not having updated itself, and when I try to connect to internet to install an update by clicking the "check for updates" button, it just comes up with a message telling me " update was unsuccessful". Does anyone know if it's just me or is it a general blip?

Comments

  • Mine updated OK last night, but I had to manually close it down (ZoneAlarm Pro blocked it doing it automatically) when I got up this morning to let the install take place.

Whatever update took place last night (and mine checks every night) it wasn't the usual kind and I had to intervene.

I don't know if this helps at all.

If nothing else is forthcoming, uninstalling and reinstalling - then updating - should fix it.

It's possible that the Avg server has just been too busy, Try again later or do a manual update. Go to: -

    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-updates

and download the latest update e.g. AVI: 269.13.28 21st September 2007.

    After you have the files,

    1. Verify and update your computer's time and date, AVG uses this info to determine if you have the correct files.

    2. Open the Control Center,

    3. Double Click on the Update Manager or select it then press the Properties button at the bottom of the screen.

    4. On the Properties screen unselect the option labeled "Do not ask for the update source", click Apply and Ok.

    5. Now click the Update button on the bottom of the screen.

    6. In the pop-up window, click the Folder button.

    7. Navigate to the folder where you had downloaded the update files into and click Ok. (Sometimes this needs done twice for AVG to see the file.)

    8. AVG will update now with the file you had selected unless it contains the same as you already had.

That should be all you need to have updated your system.

Hopefully this helps you overcome your update problem. All should now be well and your protected with the latest definitions.
    Cheers
    ;)

avast is free too, but i would use avira antivir (which is also free) as it has a 92% detection rate as proved in a recent independant review (by pc pro, i think)

Thanks all for the replies. I tried updating manually following bainy's instructions but it tells me there are no new updates in the folder ( though I have manually downloaded all current updates to that location). I've tried loads of times to update via internet but I'm still getting the message that update was unsuccessful and it won't even start connecting to their server. I was going to unistall but can anyone advise me first - I have a few viruses in the vault - what happens to them if I unistall the program? Do i reinfect my PC? ( Sorry if it sounds ludicrous to those in the know :o ). Thanks!

You can delete all the files in the vault before you start. I would then uninstall and re-install AVG, but you may have to get all the updates in one go (which could take a while).

Anyone spot any problems with this method (I'm prepared to be laughed at!)?

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.
  • The only thing I would do different is to download avg from the website first as they are constantly tweaking the program - then unistall etc...

Reluctant_spender - I downloaded the avg first as you suggested and selected repair installation, it seems to have done the trick:j & I haven't actually uninstalled anything.( At least I don't think I have! )

rmg 1 - It took me about 10 mins to download the whole thing.

Thanks all for your help! What would I do without this site.......:T

Be careful! Don't change from what works just because someone says so :)

Put two AV programs on your machine and you might find it doesn't work at all.

There's nothing wrong with AVG (or Avast), so don't change for the sake of it.
