Taxed newbie this a.m.

Every year, I use mse for insurance quotes, play the entire game.

Rang Saga, current insurers [ below £100 p.a., fully comp. including travel cover] to advise vehicle change, expecting reduction, given lower cc. newer vehicle.

NO! Saga wanted £85 p.a. more + £25 rearrangement fee[found in t's and c's, unfortunately:(]

Told lass I'd check other providers, also aware that changing means a £50 cancellation fee:mad:.

I'm about half-way through the mse slog and already find this newer, small engine means quotes of £250 and above:eek:.

Why is this, please?
I've paid below £100 p.a. for about 10 years now. 4 different cars.

I doubt anyone would be able to give you an exact answer, as it will be down to complex algorithms from your insurers.
A guess would be it's down to the fact that if your car is written off, it will cost more to replace, but again, that's just a guess.

As you are prob aware your insurance is probably as cheap as it gets, so £85 may be a drop in the ocean for others, but for you it's almost double.

Unfortunately, as you've explained it looks like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place here, but it looks like you have little choice but to pay.

I thought it would be pretty obvious, a 17 year old banger (no offence) is going to carry a lot less risk than a new, modern motor.

Possibly more powerful / better performance and newer .............. and insurance has increased recently.

I changed from a 10 y.o 1.6 focus to a new 1.0 CMax, 25% more power. About £75 to change including admin but at renewal I found it cheaper.

    My mums was the same

She replaced a 1997 1.2 Clio with a 2011 1.1 fiat panda and the insurance went up

Replacement value increases - so cost of insurance increases
  • Really? Isn't it obvious?

As they have you captured (existing customer) they exploit their position and charge you as much as they think they can get away with assuming you won't cancel mid-term. At the very least you won't be getting any discount which you probably would if you were looking for a new policy.

Thankyou to all very much, #6 excepted. Were it obvious, I would not ask.

That aside, all your replies are absorbed:-) From my angle, thought my low value, unremarkable, old reliable[until last month] should cost MORE to insure, me thinking more extensive and/or increasingly frequent, repair costs would be higher.

Seemed to me that unlikelihood of same with this 2007 one, which is still ancient to most users, would gain brownie points.

I have paid well below £1k to my wonderful fenboys, whose praises I will ever sing. They have kept me mobile through thick and thin for nearly 20 years.

Seems to me the extra via Saga is a better deal than any newbie quote above £250 p.a. @ £85+£25 arrangement fee = £110.
    Any other thoughts?

Seems like Saga pitched it about right then bearing in mind their charges and the market rate. Though presumbaly a new policy would last 12 months and Saga would only be swapping cars on whatever is left of the existing policy to run.

It's a minefield. Maybe you went from the least likely car to be involved in an accident to the most likely.

Yes Ed, brought that to lass's attention and tried to gently, insidiously, shove, oh so naicely:-)
'The system won't let me.' Quelle surprise! Not even when I said I'd had good haggles most years and named the Useful Lad, from last year who threw in Europe, excl. Spain, travel b/d cover. [ yes, I keep notes.]

It IS all a great game, I know.
