Slow ipad

Can anyone clarify this? During a casual pub conversation I commented that my iPad 2 is becoming more and more sluggish responding to screen touch. A friend said that this is because on each IOS update Apple insert something into the software to make the iPad slow. If they didn't do this, then eventually the sales of new iPad would be negligible. This way, people would be so fed up of slow iPads that they will give up & buy a new one. Seems like a catch 22 , as if you don't update IOS, there are some programmes that won't run on old software. Is this true? It certainly seems like something that Apple would do.

IT progresses every year and changes are made to hardware and software - it is not exclusive to Apple.
The ipad2 was launched almost 6 years ago - a lifetime in IT terms.
I very much doubt I could install windows 10 on my 6 year old laptop and expect it to work with all the new software and apps.0 -
Apple, like all manufacturers, add bells and whistles to their software updates which will understandably run better on newer hardware.
As pointed out above your iPad 2 is almost six years old; some companies drop updates after 18-24 months.
One suggestion could be to back up your data to iCloud/desktop/laptop and reset iPad to factory status. It won't knock your socks off in terms of speed but it *may* help. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
To be expected, I am afraid. As has been mentioned, software updates contain things which slow down older devices not to the point of the user being frustrated that they go to another provider, but small changes which progressively slow down the device to the point that, after a year or two, they think "time for a new one" but aren't annoyed enough to move away from Apple. That and, as has been mentioned, 6 years is a lifetime in the tech world and the old hardware just cannot keep up.
This is purely anecdotal and largely a personal perspective, but I imagine it rings true with many people.
It is sneaky, but it is also very good business as iphone and ipad sales will testify. I am convinced that this is why they do not do anything to improve the battery life which, in my experience, is good for a year and then significantly tails off.0 -
Having similar problems with iPad2. Is there an equivalent to removing cookies and defragging as I woukd do with my PC?
How would I back up to the cloud? Since my email is net based I could remove all my emails if I knew how ...0 -
My ipad2 has been flaky for a couple of years and some websites are now unuseable, especially those using lots of plug ins linking to different media sources, newspapers being the worst.
You can try factory reset as mentioned above, but it is older chip technology so performance will only get worse as software is written to take account of the new chipsets.0 -

2006 laptop here with Windows 10 running better than it did with it's original Vista.
Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Download the puffin browser app if you want to read the news sites on an iPad 2, works most of the time without crashing, unlike safari.0
