Can I claim PPI back on an old defaulted loan with a CCJ

Hello
I recently came across some very old paperwork for a Barclayloan I took out in 1997, I renegotiated this loan a couple of times but each time I was told I had to take the PPI as part of a single sum - this is reflected in the paperwork I found including the account number.
I was a bit reckless in my youth with money and ended up defaulting on the loan, it moved to a debt collector, went to court, I was given a CCJ and an earnings deduction was started. I then left that job and the loan went unpaid, leaving approx. £5k of debt. I have since married and moved away and had no further dealings with bailiffs etc. I am not proud of this time!
I have since become an adult and have a joint mortgage (for the last 9 years) and nothing detrimental appears on my credit file, I have had multiple store cards and accounts and have never had a problem getting credit since.
Having now found this paperwork, am I able to claim back the PPI or will it stir up the debt and CCJ - I do not want to risk losing my current credit rating or jeopardise my future mortgage applications.
Thank you for your advice in advance :)

You could try but certainly any refund can be offset against the money you didn't pay back, you could get anything else. If the finance has not been paid or acknowledged for 6 years it can't be reactivated nor can the CCJ appear again

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Great thank you, sounds like I've nothing to lose and even if I don't benefit from the claim it would make me feel better about the redress if it went to paying the debt off. Really appreciate your advice thank you :)
