Finding a solicitor

Good Evening,
I will be in a position to start applying for a mortgage and looking at houses within the next month or so and obviously I will need a solicitor.
Do most solicitors charge the same fees or is it worth shopping around for quotes??
I will be purchasing only, I have nothing to sell.
Thanks & Regards
Daniel

We have had dealings with a few lately . Some have a standard charge whether your house transaction materializes or not , some only charge if it goes through, some will still charge a % if it fails . Others charge by the hour and for every little email or telephone call or letter. City solicitors seem to charge more than suburban ones. And yes, some in the same area charge more than others.
You also can get conveyancing solicitors who may be cheaper, but the minute you get a problem outside their remit, you find yourself having to consult another more nousy legal eagle, so they can be false economy.
Once on their books, some will deal with you only by email not phone. Some will treat you like a total inconvenience to their day if you try to get in touch at all.
So yes , Id approach at least a couple and ask how they charge and how they operate , and if you can get a recommendation from someone you know and trust ,so much the better. (The EA will be happy to recommend -- but it will be one that will have HIS best interests at heart, not necessarily yours)0 -
If using a mortgage broker is it likely they will have links or be able to recommend a good solicitor/conveyancer?0
