With thanks to a poster on Bob's

No problem with money-off vouchers in Tesco Porthmadog in North Wales.
I spent about £50 and had about £5 worth of mixed vouchers ( did'nt buy any of the products) Very pleased

Might be handy for those of you in that beautiful area.icon7.gif

Never been to the Tesco in Porthmadog. I remember the outrage that they were knocking the old school down and building on the land! My mother in law used to own a shop in porthmadog and used to love going there!

Outrage over the Tesco store in Bangor too. Heard today that they have to knock the store down in order to extend. The council said the only way they can extend is to knock the old one down (although only a few years old, around 8 yrs I think!!!) and start from scratch. So they're in the process of building a "temp" store so all this could be done! Sounds a bit mad, but I suppose the council put the restriction in hope of discouraging them. But seems that knocking a huge store like Bangor is nothing to Mr Tesco. What a mess! The pharmacy will be in a portacabin apparently and Caernarfon -tiny store-will be taking over the home shopping!:o

Can anyone else confirm this? Haven't been to the store for years so news to me! Sounds a bit mad doesn't it but person telling me works there and sounded genuine!

p.s Is Asda still coming to Farrar Road in Bangor?;)

    Hi Welshlamb
Yup I can confirm that Tesco is coming down, I shopped there yesterday, at the far end of the car park they are putting up the temporary construction, taking up part of the carpark with all the constuction vehicles etc, it is a bit of a mess, the tesco - caernarfon used to have a lovely building next to it which housed the NFU that has now been demolished and it looks as if Tesco is developing that in some way,
I have no Idea about Asda, I havent seen one, but then I don't usually venture into the town itself too often,

1Jim I too love portmadog, shop there also nearly every week, shame you and your wife had a bad experience with a B&B, I had a horrid experience of one in Maidestone in Kent once, It was so scarry I left without sleeping there, even though I paid! Ha!

When I went to Porthmadog to do the weekly shop last week the checkout girl would only take vouchers for items that I was purchasing. She'd already had a telling off for accepting all vouchers that morning!

To answer my own question ;) Asda have apparently had enough with the hassles with planning etc for building on the old Bangor City pitch and have now decided that The Heart of Ynys Mon, LLangefni is the place to build and open up!

If I remember, Safeway was all set to build there until the takeover and wherever they were planning on building is where Asda hope to set up.

It's going to be on the old cattle market site-I think.

  • The new tesco Bangor and the "new" tesco Porthmadog are great.

Although, I find it unfair that tescos porth put Leo's (co-op) out of business, if they are planning to destroy the smaller shops shouldn't they add and pharmacy, a cafe, a clothing section and whatever else they fit into their larger stores. Then it'll keep the tourists happy! LOL! But, fair doos theres stuff they sell in there that wasn't available in porth before.

As for the one in Bangor, its AMAZING!!!!!! it has everything and anything!

Have they started building the ASDA yet? I haven't been to Llangefni in ages.

It's it's going up really quickly. They're interviewing this and next week. Should be open by October apparently. Although it looks like the car park is going to be tiny.
Tesco Port were not allowed to open a pharmacy in their store. It works by having to apply for a license but if the service is being fulfilled within the immediate commuinty it won't be granted.
L Rowlands have 2 pharmacies in the steet so they couldn't really justify it. The same applies to Asda in Llangefni, L Rowlands have a pharmacy there as do Boots. I think it's true to say that tourists -especially the elder-like the little shops and the community feel. but of course the large supermarket is handy for families on holidays.

Lucky you if you havn't been to Llangefni lately. I was there for a few months with work recently and they wer re doing the one way (by post office) and talk about chaos! All traffic were diverted past where the Asda is being built and most of the car parks were taken over by large machines. It's chaos to park in Llangefni at the best of times, especially as the market takes up a major carpark on a thurs and sat!!;)

    p.s croeso i MSE WelshDawny!
