Seat Ibiza DSG Gearbox Failure

My son's Seat Ibiza DSG gearbox has failed at 41,000 miles.

The car gave no warning and has a full dealer service history.

The Service record confirms that it had a DSG clutch replacement and also a DSG oil change as part of a recall at circa 20,000 miles when they changed from synthetic oil to mineral because of known issues..

Seat have diagnosed the car and say worst case that it needs a new gearbox but cannot be certain till they strip it. They quoted £4200 .

My son has since spoken to Seat UK who despite having been told by Stoke Seat that the synthetic oil could have caused the issue, have offered only 30% toward the repair.

VW Asia part of the same manufacturer group have extended the warranty for the DSG by two more years because of problems and had SEAT UK done the same thing the car would be totally covered.

Does anybody have any experience or advice re this issue, particularly as the Seat dealer admitted that the wrong oil being used for ~20,000 miles may have caused the failure.

I'm afraid as your son purchased the car privately, and in any case not from a SEAT dealer, he has no comeback against the manufacturer, the dealership and probably not in this instance the seller. The only thing I would do is push for more of a contribution citing what the dealer has said in reference to using incorrect oil.

or go to a VAG specialist and the work will still work out cheaper and possibly to a higher standard too. Ask for recommendations on a Seat or VAG forum or Briskoda

    +1

You should get a gearbox rebuilt for a fraction of that.
  • Years ago the main bearing failed on my VW Passat TDi 130 Sport :(

Car was purchased and always serviced at VW main dealer.

But... VW knew there was an issue with that particular g'box and despite the offer of a contribution it was still going to cost ~£2000.

Ended up getting the g'box rebuilt at a specialist for £700 odd. The gearbox look brand new inside and out [saw it at a few stages] Never had anymore issues :)

Funnily enough their yard was full of VAG cars from that era awaiting repair...

    Define "failed".

What doesn't it do that it should or does do that it shouldn't?

No real advice but sympathies. The DSG box on my Golf TDI went a few months ago and I think we were somewhere in the region of £3400 to get it fixed.

I knew something was wrong when the car started violently jerking / banging when I moved off.
