How many applications did it take?

I have been applying for jobs here and there - probably about 10 jobs at a guess ( not looking 100% seriously at the moment) but have only been offered 1 interview.

I know I'm not talking masses of applications, but I don't remember having so many rejections in the past.

How many applications did it take for you to land a job?

With my previous role I was just offered it (did a placement year there), did interviews for formality's sake.

While there I applied for 2 new ones, rejected for 1 after interview then offered my current role. While here I've applied for 1 and still unsure if I'll be offered it or not...they wanted 2 people and are apparently asking HR to authorise an additional role (was 1 vacancy) to offer to me.

All 3 were recruiters approaching me on LinkedIn rather than me actively looking

I'm probably finding similar with contracting.

I only apply for job roles where there is at least an 80% match of my skill set to their requirements. 5 targeted applications would typically yield 2 interviews and typically i'd expect to get at least one offer from that.

I'm not a fan of the scattergun approach - i dont apply for just anything, and i think thats part of the trick. Also, i'll tailor my CV to highlight the experience i have in the skills areas they require.
  • For my current role, a record 2 applications, 1 rejection, 1 interview and 1 job offer.

What type of roles are you applying for?

I once helped shortlist for what was at the time of going to advert one role and became two during the process where we got 215 applications. Nhs admin role. Relatively well Paid for the area.

However if you're applying for specialist neurosurgery roles I imagine less competition for the roles.

My latest role I applied for 5 roles over 12 months. Got three interviews.
One I didn't want. PT low pay.
One wanted someone with more experience - I had none and was kept hanging for ages and told I was second choice.
Third one I used the feedback from the other two interviews and was told 20minutes after interview I had it. (Interviewed on a Friday afternoon - there had been interviews on Thursday / Friday - with quite a few no shows).

This was a relatively specialist role - in that you have to have a specific degree / masters to get it. Numbers of applicants for the roles are low as the hours are shocking and staff turnover in high. The experience is invaluable. Haha.

    I wouldn't be getting too
Disheartened. The role where I was shortlisting. I must have applied for 40 jobs and got two interviews. The first interview was a farce. The second I got a better job then the one I thought I was applying for. Thought for that role you had to be able to drive and have a computing qualification - however appatanly you needed neither.

It is a head slog. But you've got at least one interview - so your applications / cv must be hitting the criteria. It may be worthwhile asking for feedback. I had a friend call recently to chase an application - and the firm basically stated they'd worhdrawn the position.

Also the role i got - figured they'd filled the roles as they'd been out to advert for more people some part time - I thought they were back filling. It took them nearly three months to invite me to interview. I saw next lot of jobs readvertised and figured there was no point applying as they hadn't wanted my application the first time. sometimes when places are short staffed they can't make the time to short list / interview etc.

    Stashbuster - 2014 98/100 - 2015 175/200 - 2016 501 / 500 2017 - 200 / 500 2018 3 / 500

  • Mr Spouse got his current contract in the shortest interview ever - the recruiter rang him and asked if he would be interested (literally, 'Would you be interested?', to which he replied 'yes'), they then went to the company and said 'Mr Spouse is interested, is he OK for you?' and they said 'yes'. All happened in about 30 minutes.

On the down side, we sometimes go 3 months without a contract.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...

I think the issue is I am trying to get into a new area for me (HR). I have transferable skills and a qualification in the new field but I guess most recruiters want people with clearly defined past experience. I'm prepared to start at a junior level but think maybe companies will go with younger people for such jobs. I am confident about progressing once I have 'got my foot on the ladder' but the first step is proving hard.

I currently work mostly unsupervised across multiple locations and I'm unsure whether this is good because it shows I have the ability to be organised and work autonomously, or whether they presume I'd be bored in an office / unable to work in a team / follow instructions? !

Put your cv or profile on the sort of grad jobs websites that recruiters look at.

My son did that recently and a recruiter found him for a role that hadn't been advertised elsewhere.
