Hi,
I've had a bursary in the past and normally it doesn't come through until mid October but it might be different for nurses. Hope that helps!0 -
Hi Diane,
ALL THE VERY BEST OF LUCK with your nursing diploma.
Sorry I can't help on the bursary question - Hope it comes through very soon for you.
However, do you mind me asking? How much are you expected to live on per annum? The reason I ask is that I would dearly love to do the Nursing course but can't seem to convince myself that I would be able to survive, especially considering the shift commitments involved which I perceive would inhibit taking up alternative employment to support myself whilst studying? or am I terribly wrong about this??
PM me, if you have the inclination and the time of course?!!
Thanx for taking the time to read this anyway - and again wishing you the very best - hope you really enjoy it and I look forward to seeing you back here in a few years all spotted up- in your nursing consultants uniform!;)
P.S. FYI - I have been a trained nurse in the past - worked in ICU for years as an ENG, did the back to nursing practice course in 2002, all of clinical practice was critical care. Sadly, couldn't accept job offers back then because of childcare issues (there were only 2, 12 and a half hour shifts, therefore nights were a very regular feature of the post!!) Fussy old me I know - but didn't feel it was responsible to leave an eight year old at home alone during the night!!:rotfl: Currently have active PIN but can't get an interviewI am pretty sure why Grrrrrrrgh:mad: , but that's a whole new thread!!!!. Extremely discouraged as you can tell. Loved my job and really did well when went back into it, but looks like I missed the boat?!.......but if someone like yourself could convince me to take the plunge I might eventually go to uni and do the diploma, once I am convinced I could afford to, that is!:o
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. :A0 -

Well I am right this minute filling out my bursary application form, I hope it is a decent amount as I have two children and will spend a lot on travelling to Uni and the placement hospital. Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.

DD had her first bursary payment about 2 weeks after she started her course. It was 2 months paid in one lot - regular monthly payments from next month and no payment in Aug '08 ( she got all the paperwork informing her of this a week later!)."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0

The payment of bursaries is usually poorly executed... Last year some people were still waiting for their first payment in APRIL, despite having applied in time etc...April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200

I started on the 25th September last year and received two months bursary two weeks later. The bursary isnt great if you live on your own (£510) but if you are a mature student, or have children then you get extra and it works out better. You can claim travel expenses if you have to travel further to your placement hospital than you have to travel to university. Example, I live in Derby, go to sheffield hallam uni but im on placement in Derby so I dont get placement travel expenses.
I dont know what im going to do for money this year actually, have found out that its going to cost me around £80 a week to get to uni for six weeks by train and obviously a £510 bursary and the cost of living doesnt leave much for travel.
Anyway, good luck with the course!0 -
as Dr Fluffy says, the NHS Student Grants Unit is notoriously inefficient and tend to process forms VERY slowly - if they manage not to lose them.
However, most unis are very aware of this and you may be able to apply for the Access to Learning Fund or for an emergency loan if your funding is delayed."Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."0
