technical issue with probate pdfs

Hi All,
as if it isn't stressy enough, dealing with family estate issues, I'm struggling with pdfs from the government. Specifically, I've worked out exactly what I have to enter in each of the text boxes on my dear old mum's IHT205, but the pdf won't behave correctly.
I downloaded from the gov website (so presumably, it's the correct and original file...), worked through the companion advice notes and finally, entered the appropriate value in each field on the form, using the form on my computer.
While I can enter a value in each of the numbered fields, when it comes to entering a value in the letter boxes, I can't.
A quick call to the support line and I learn that the letter boxes eg Box A, Box B etc., are supposed to calculate the respective totals for the values entered into the numbered boxes.
Mine don't.
So these fields neither calculate the value not allow me to enter the value as figures... The lad on the support line said the solution is to print the bloomin' thing out & write the value in the box using a pen!!
Does this ring a bell with anyone else? Wot blinkin' century are we in??!!
I've tried updating Adobe Reader to the latest vs., opening the IHT205 in Chrome & Internet Explorer, but no dice. Any advice?
