My original post stated that I don't recall being asked if I wanted that kind of insurance. If ppi was mis sold to people why not gap insurance. The paperwork states that I am paying £7.86 per month insurance. If I had known what it was for I would not have needed to ask the bank

Again, I don't mean to be rude but the fact you don't recall it doesn't mean it didn't happen. GAP insurance is provided by a different company to the finance provider as it's an insurance product. A full policy would be drawn up with different levels of cover for each individual customer as each sale is unique so different values would be covered (so not like PPI). You would have signed the documentation to confirm you wanted it and the dealership will produce that paperwork and your complaint will end. It really isn't worth stressing about this as GAP is a good product that will mean you are not out of pocket if your car is written off or stolen

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Well then complain on that basis, but don't be too surprised when you are presented with comprehensive documentation which shows it did happen and that you signed your agreement to it.

2014 is only two years ago and financial institutions are savvy enough these days to fully protect themselves from "vexatious" complaints such as this.

You really don't have a valid complaint.
