My numbers not on facebook. But friends and family have my number in their phones and most likely with my name attached to it. So if they use facebook and whatsapp it doesnt take much of a program to link your facebook name to a real phone number.

They claimed this could not be done, but have now said they have found a way to do it. They knew it was possible all along and were probably doing it.

Everything they bring out has been trialled in secret already. Allow facebook to track you to offer you special offers, adverts and deals an certain stores when your local to them. They had been spying on users for some time trialling it before they announced it.

On facebook you set your profiles as private, friends only. Why does your name get added to the you may know this person list?
OK it will say you cannot contact them but it doesnt stop it showing they have an account.

I dont have whatsapp, but i know for sure they have my number because other users have it on their phones. And its highly likely they know more about me because of that also.
If i signed up to whatsapp i could use a fake name, when x amount of other users have my number and the same or similar name then they know.

Unless everyone you know enters your number under hooknose or lard**** and not your real name.

Its free for a reason, data acquisition...

So, not really understanding iMessage (does anyone?) presumably when it says 'sent as a text message' then you get charged for an international text??
    Is that so??
If I send a text ( not Whatsapp) to someone who has an iPhone, the text is blue. If that person does not have an iPhone then the text is green. My phone plan includes unlimited monthly texts in UK. So, if I message my sister in Australia ( who has an iPhone) then I use ordinary text which goes as iMessage ( blue). But my friend in Australia doesn't have iPhone so I use Whatsapp to message her.
When I text anyone who is in UK I just use ordinary texts (SMS) as I have unlimited text in my plan so it doesn't matter if they have iPhone or not. However, my monthly plan does not include photo or video messaging, so if I want to send photos or videos to anyone whether in UK or Australia, I use Whatsapp. I suppose this does sound a little confusing but once you master it, you just tend to do it automatically.

    Sorry - I'll ask again

    My wife has an iPhone
Just occasionally (maybe when the signal is poor), she sends another iPhone user an sms but instead of going as an iMessage (blue) it sends it as an 'ordinary' sms (green) with a note underneath saying 'sent as a text message'.
If this happens when you are sending to Australia, presumably, it gets charged as an international text?

    Is that correct?

Yes, if it's sent green as a text message you are charged or use your in plan text message allowance.

If the person is abroad and you send as text then yes.

However, if they are just out and about but return to a wifi or mobile data zone the message is delivered by that network.

If you are in the UK and have an SMS allowance it is not a problem

If you have family abroad WhatsApp is essential.

I have it on my phone and want it on my PC. I am looking at a screen that says "use whatsapp on your phone to scan the code"
Square with black/white and phone in it.
What do I use on my phone to 'scan it ' please
Do i need to download a Barcode scanner or something from Googleplay

Depending on your phone, the Camera app might have a barcode/QR code option. Otherwise you could try RedLaser from the Play store. Or is it an option in the Whatsapp app itself?

Edit: @David ... I think the poster is past that stage. I've not read the article (can't access it here) but I think you need to validate a code via your phone before the deesktop version will connect to your account.
